FAQs – Everything you need to know about Yung Ho Martial Arts!

How do I know that Taekwondo is the right form of martial arts for me?

Our classes are designed with all ages and all levels of experience in mind. We have a variety of different classes for children, adults, and those who prefer individual lessons. We believe that Taekwondo is meant for everyone but we encourage you to work with your primary care doctor, as with any new sport or work out routine, to make sure this level of physical activity is right for you.

How many times per week can I attend class?

If you sign up for classes with Yung Ho Martial Arts you can attend classes as many times as you’d like. We encourage all students to attend classes at least twice per week but we have students who attend five days per week and that’s fine by us! Attending class one day per week is a great option for beginners, young children, or students with tight schedules. In other words, we’re flexible and here to meet your training needs!

Do I need to buy a uniform (or a dobak) myself?

We are happy to provide you with a Yung Ho Martial Arts dobak so that you don’t have to buy one yourself! This is all included as a part of your student tuition and registration fee. Your first belt, which is the white belt, is also included.

Do you offer a free trial so I can see if I like martial arts?

Absolutely! We are so certain that you’ll love our school that we’re offering the first week free of charge! This is a great way to see which of our programs you and your family like best. It’s also a great way to encourage your friends to check us out with you!

Do you have an after school program?

Yes! We have a team of qualified after school teachers with decades of after school program experience between them. We offer pick-up from local schools as well as homework assistance, arts & crafts, and one-hour of Taekwondo each day. For more information about our after school program get in touch with us today! Give us a call, send us a message on Facebook, or fill out our contact form. We’d love to hear from you!

How experienced are your instructors?

Our instructors have (literally) centuries of experience between them. That’s more than 100 years! Our instructors are led by Yung Ho Martial Arts owner and founder Grandmaster Yung Ho Jun – 9th degree Black Belt. Many of our instructors have practiced Taekwondo with our school since they were children or young adults themselves. This shows how much our students love us! Grandmaster Jun is a world-renowned instructor. He is also co-founder of Ko Am Mu Do.

What if I can’t make your weekly group classes?

Private lessons are also available with Grandmaster Jun. Our private lessons are designed with the individual student in mind. These classes are perfect for those who cannot make our group classes but would like to train with the Grandmaster. Private lessons are for students ages 10+ only, but for all levels of experience. Grandmaster Jun brings a lifetime of experience to each lesson making this form of instruction highly sought-after. Please call for availability!

Can I take your classes if I’m new to working out, not in great shape, or have no experience in martial arts

Of course! Our classes provide a GREAT work out, and are designed with all ages and experience levels in mind. Martial arts is a great way to start your personal fitness journey. Our classes encourage students to go at their own pace and our instructors understand that everyone has different needs. If you have any questions or concerns around starting a new work out routine please speak with your primary care doctor.

Can I practice Taekwondo with pre-existing injuries or medical conditions?

Our school allows students to set the pace of their training based on their personal abilities and comfort level. It is important to know that our instructors will never force you to participate in an activity that you feel uncomfortable about or feel unable to perform. As with any type of instructor-led physical activity it’s important to communicate with your instructor so they are aware of any limitations or restrictions you may have, whether they be permanent or temporary. If you have specific questions about your ability to participate in certain activities we recommend you speak with your primary care physician, doctor, or medical specialist.

Am I able to take class with my children / can siblings take class together?

Many of our students join with their families and enjoy working out together. Our school offers a variety of different programs and we try to ensure each class is designed with the the age and level of its students in mind. If your children are ages 15+ they can participate in the adult evening level classes with you. Children ages 4-14 are able to attend our evening children classes with other students their age. But don’t worry, parents are always welcome to watch our evening classes for children in our parent viewing area.

What age is appropriate to begin lessons?

Any age! Well, almost any age. We offer two levels of evening classes – one for children ages 4 – 14, and one for adults and teens ages 15+. We also provide an after school program complete with homework assistance, pick-up for local schools, and one-hour of Taekwondo a day. We also offer a Black Belt Academy to help your school age students with their journey to achieving black belt status. If our group lessons don’t fit your schedule we also offer one-on-one private lessons for children ages 10+ and private lessons for adults with Grandmaster Jun, 9th Degree Black Belt.

Do you offer summer camp for school age students?

Yes! We offer full-day, seasonal camps during all Hillsborough County School District breaks. We open our full-day camps during Spring Break, Thanksgiving Break, and Winter Break. Our seasonal camps are open from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday, excluding holidays. During our camps students participate in a variety of fun & enriching activities in addition to daily Taekwondo lessons. Our camps are open to students ages 5 – 14.

How quickly will I move through each belt level?

As quickly as you’d like! While our lessons are well paced for most of our students, all individuals learn at different rates. Some, though comfortable with the skills needed to advance, may decide to dedicate more time to really perfect and master their proficiency. Others prefer to attend classes daily so that they can move through the different belt levels more quickly. The important thing to remember is that you set the pace you’re comfortable with, and we’re there to guide you every step of the way!

Am I too old to start training?

They say the best time to plan a tree was 20 years ago, the second best time is today… the same goes for starting your training! It’s never too late to begin your training. Our instructors are experienced and qualified to work with all ages. The best part is that you decide the pace of your training, which allows you to practice at a rate and level that is comfortable to you. As always, though, if you have any concerns we recommend you speak with your primary care physician before signing up.

Will training in Taekwondo turn my child into a bully or make them violent?

The is a question we get frequently, and we’re happy the answer is NO. Our school has a zero tolerance approach for bullying. Keeping in mind that our martial arts school is only one influence in your children’s lives, martial arts is known to improve discipline and listening skills while instilling a respect for all fellow human-beings. Martial arts teaches children to be confident in themselves and their abilities. Our school focuses on teaching the five pillars of Taekwondo: courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, and an indomitable spirit. Our instructors are experienced in working with children to help them reach their brightest and best potential.

Is Taekwondo good for self-defense?

Yes! Taekwondo has many benefits including self-defense.

Is Taekwondo a contact sport?

Yes and no. Sports fighting (the contact piece) is one element of Taekwondo. The overall purpose is to immerse the student in the five tenants of Taekwondo – courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, and an indomitable spirit. While the sports fighting element like participating in certain tournaments and sparring techniques are considered to be a contact sport, it is not a required part of your training at Yung Ho Martial Arts.

Is your school accredited?

Yes! In fact, our school is one of the only schools in Tampa Bay accredited by both Kukkiwon and World Taekwondo. In addition to Kukkiwon and World Taekwondo, we also hold a membership with the Grandmaster Society and another accreditation with World Chang Mu Kwon. When choosing a school it’s important to find one that meets your needs and is reputable. Accreditation is an important piece of understanding a school’s credibility. Accreditation helps to ensure a school meets or exceeds minimum standards defined. Participating in accreditation means that we have enough pride in our quality and standard of instruction that we are willing to be reviewed by the highest measure of expectations.
